China 1900, 1 clasp, Relief of Pekin (5141 Pte H. Lockwood. 2nd Rl: Welsh Fus:), minor contact wear, edge bruise, overall very fine
Albert Henry Lockwood, known as Henry, was born at St. Thomas, Monmouth, Monmouthshire in 1874. Enlisting with the Royal Welsh Fusiliers on 21 July 1896 at Wrexham he was soon posted to join the International Squadron for the Cretan Intervention with 2nd Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers, arriving at Malta on 11 November and Crete on 18 November. He remained here for the better part of a year, with a month long posting to Egypt in August before re-joining the international force, leaving Crete in late 1898.
Joining the army gathering for the relief of the Pekin Legations on 14 December 1898 Lockwood took part in the advance of the Gaselee Expedition. The Royal Welsh Fusiliers were very heavily engaged at the Battle of Tientsin fighting alongside a unit of American Marines. Lockwood survived the ferocious combat and went on to join the Allied forces in the race to relieve the Legations. Remaining in China for the next three years he was posted to India on 10 November 1902, seeing another three years of service here. Finally Lockwood returned home on 26 October 1906, he was discharged to the reserves on 11 May 1907; sold together with a copied medal roll.
