Joseph Lockett was born at Norton in the Moors, Burslow in 1841. Enlisting with the 80th Regiment Of Foot he is noted as being posted to Saugor, East Indies in 1861 and later at Belfast, Ireland in 1871 before serving in the Perak Campaign on the Malay Peninsula which lasted from 1874-76. Lockett's record shows that his long service was rewarded and he appears on the roll for the South Africa 1877-79 medal with the rank of Lance-Sergeant and the clasp for 1878 (Medal). He was admitted to the Chelsea Pensioner's Hospital on 12 June 1883 with the rank of Sergeant Cook from the 2nd Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment.
