Charles Henry Wyld Roberts was born at Windsor on 3 February 1866, the son of Charles Roberts, a grocer who lived at 1 Park Street and entered Royal Service on 18 July 1893. He was appointed to be Clerk of the Inspector's Staff, Buckingham Palace and was also made Clerk of the Chapel Royal on 15 July 1906, for which he earned an extra £30 per annum. In 1920, his salary was £250, which included a War Bonus of 30% of his salary and £13 per quarter.
