James Gordon Nicholson was born on 28 May 1918 at Hartford, Cheshire, son of Sir John Gibb Nicholson and Lady Jessie, who latterly lived at Great Roke, Witley, Surrey and Medstead Grange, Alton. Nicholson was educated at Stowe, where he excelled as an athlete, before going up to Trinity College, Cambridge, passing out in 1939. He was commissioned into the Black Watch on 11 February 1940 and served with the 2nd Battalion, initially in Africa, with Nicholson commanding the rear party who were left at Amriya in October 1941, in Syria by this point.
By the conclusion of the Second World War, Nicholson had seen further service in Burma and was promoted to Major. On 10 September 1945, at the Savoy Chapel, he married Annette Royds, youngest daughter of Sir Percy Royds (of Antarctic fame) and retired on 8 May 1946.
Sold together with four named and cased Stowe School sports prize Medals, release letter, Trinity Certificate, National Registration ID card, Passport issued in June 1936, their Wedding service and a quantity of letters, which place him in all manner of locations from Kenya, to Australia and Jamaica.
