Ernest George Miles was born at Barry, Glamorgan in January 1906, the son of John and Elizabeth Miles of 162 Woodlands Road, Barry. Attesting with the Royal Artillery in 1938 Miles was posted to 135 Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment and reposted to 139 light Anti-Aircraft Regiment on 19 February 1942. On 13 May 1943 he was serving as part of 94 Battery at the Marconi & Compton works, Chelmsford during a German air raid. His gun was caught in the blast from a parachute mine and both Miles and a number of the other gunners were seriously wounded, his best friend Reg was killed immediately. Miles was taken to a hospital in Tenby, Wales but died from his injuries that same night. He is buried at Cardiff Western Cemetery; sold together with two Royal Artillery cap badges and a cigarette lighter as well as original photographs of the recipient and copied research including Commonwealth War Graves details, 1911 census information and Army death certificate along with an original, handwritten note to the grandson of the recipient from his daughter detailing the circumstances surrounding his military career and the events of his death.
