Dorothy Marguerite Stamp Ayers was born at 13 May 1887 at Hampstead, London, the daughter of William and Jane Symons. Joining the Voluntary Aid Detachment on 22 January 1918 she worked as both a Nurse and a Hospital Cook. Her service ended on 17 April 1919 but she remained a devoted member of the British Red Cross Society and continued to work with them. Marrying Charles Thomas Ayers on 24 May 1920 at Christ Church, Surrey, she was to rise within the British Red Cross being appointed as a teacher on 3 November 1934. During the Second World War she again took a role with the British Red Cross, entering the war on 3 September 1939 and receiving her first War Service certificate on 6 December 1940. Ayers' role in the conflict remains unclear - however a letter does indicate that it may have had something to do with the High Wycombe Public Health Department. She died in April 1979 at High Wycombe; sold together with handwritten research and an archive of original research including letters from the British Red Cross, a War Service Certificate dated 6 December 1940 and a number of British Red Cross award certificates as well as a National Blood Transfusion Service letter and letter from the Borough of Chepping Wycombe Public Health Department Staff Officer relating to Civil Defence service Chevrons.
