Charles John Cox was born at Gosbeck, Ipswich in 1875. He enlisted with the 1st Battalion, Yorkshire and Lancaster Regiment at Norwich on 23 June 1893. Joining the Great War in France on 18 February 1915 his Battalion was in the line during the Second Battle of Ypres, forming part of Colonel Geddes' command. This unit, positioned in the centre of the line, took part in the attack up Mauser Ridge on 23 April 1915. The attack failed to reach the German front line and casualties for the Battalion were as high as 425 men including their CO, Lieutenant-Colonel Burt.
Cox is listed as missing on 23 April and was presumed killed in action. He is commemorated upon the Menin Gate Memorial; sold together with original photographs of the recipient's name on the Menin Memorial and letters from the War Graves Commission, York and Lancaster Regiment and Norfolk Library in response to requests for information, along with copied M.I.C. details, memorial information and an extract from Gas! The Battle for Ypres, 1915 which relates to Mauser Ridge.
