Richard Ellison was married in 1904 to Mary Ellen Gowland at Usworth, County Durham. The couple lived at 28 Seventh Street South, Easington Colliery, Durham. Ellison was killed in action on 14 February 1916 at Ypres, his information was not recorded by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission until the 1980s when an employee purchased his medals. As a result he was commemorated but upon the Arras Memorial rather than the Menin Gate Memorial with the other from his Company who died the same day, Sapper P. Dixon and Sapper S. Smith; sold together with original Royal Engineers Cap Badge and copied Commonwealth War Graves details along with typed research.
