Three: Private T. Butterfield, 15th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry, who was killed in action on the First Day of the Battle of the Somme, 1 July 1916

Thomas Butterfield served with 15th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry in France from 11 September 1915. He was killed in action on the First Day of the Somme when 15th Battalion was engaged in the attack on Fricourt. They formed the reserve for the 9th Battalion, King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry early in the day and on 14:30 took part in the attack on Shelter Wood from Crucifix Trench. Butterfield was one of 130 other ranks killed during the day and was survived by his brother, William Butterfield of 7 Heighton, St. Aycliffe, Darlington; sold together with copied research including extracts from the 15th Battalion's War Diary, extracts from histories relating to the Battalion that day and a casualty roll along with Commonwealth War Graves details and an M.I.C. as well as original modern photographs of the Thiepval Memorial and Shelter Wood.
