Pair: Private J. Cowin, 7th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers, killed in action on 13 November 1916

Joseph Cowin was born at Sale, Cheshire in 1894, the son of Thomas and Fanny Cowin of Holly Villas, Mersey Road, Ashton-on-Mersey. Working as an Apprentice Carpenter prior to the war Cowin enlisted with the 7th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers. This unit took part in the attack on Beaucourt with 63 (Royal Naval) Division on 13 November 1916, they were performing a support role here so were likely engaged later in the day during the fighting to secure the redoubt on the station road in support of Hawke and Nelson Battalions. Cowin was killed in the fighting and is buried at Ancre British Cemetery, Beaumont-Hamel; sold together with copied Commonwealth War Graves details and an original business card.
