Thomas Whitmore Cromelin Irwin was born at Carnagh, Bowdon, St. John's Altrincham, Cheshire on 18 October 1896, son of Delacherios and Nona Irwin. Educated at Radley (Lowe's) from 1910-1915 where he was a member of the Cricket XI. Entering Sandhurst he took a commission in the Sherwood Foresters and entered the war in France in 1916 only to suffer severe wound to the lung. Recovering in Britain he returned to France in 1918. Irwin was mentioned by the Officer Commanding 71st Brigade in a letter to the Brigadier-General Commanding Headquarters 6th Division for actions which took place between 19-23 April 1918. He was appointed Adjutant at some stage between April-October 1918. While the Battalion was engaging German forces around Ramicourt, notably at Doon Mill, Irwin was mortally wounded on 8 October. He was evacuated to Britain but died at home on 31 October 1918, being buried in the Brockwood Military Cemetery; sold together with copied photographs and copied research including Commonwealth War Graves details, an extract from the Radleian, M.I.C. along with extracts from a history of 2nd Battalion, Sherwood Foresters and census information.
