Cornelius Donovan, a native of Clonakilty in County Cork, attested for the 69th Foot in November 1854 at the age of 18. Awarded his medal for Long Service and Good Conduct (with £5 gratuity) on 29 March 1873, he was discharged three years later on 4 July 1876. Donovan's service with the South Lincolnshires included participation in the Battle of Trout River (27 May 1870) just outside Quebec, where a force on Fenian Rebels was attacked by a mixed Canadian/British infantry Brigade, the whole commanded by Colonel George Bagot of the 69th. After a short skirmish, the Fenians withdrew and crossed back into U.S. territory - where their leaders were later arrested.
Donovan is confirmed for this Medal and Clasp, the Roll (dated 1899) noting his address as 6 Byron Lane, St. Heliers (sic), Jersey. Sold with a good quantity of copied research.
