Ivor George John Sparks was born at Cardiff on 1893 son of John and Elizabeth Sparks of Lydnhurst, Friar's Road, Barry Island. He served as Second Engineer for the S.S. Tredegar Hall on its passage from Melilla to Middlesbrough when it was sunk by UB-57 on 23 October 1917 in Bridlington Bay. Sparks was one of three crewmen for the thirty-three present to drown during the sinking. The Chief Officer launched one boat successfully, however the Master and remaining crew were unable to launch the second and were forced to jump into the sea with most being rescued by the other lifeboat and a Minesweeper. Sparks died in the sinking and is commemorated upon the Tower Hill Memorial, Barry County School Memorial and Barry Memorial Hall; sold together with a typed biographical note.
