Appears on the Roll of Honour of Members of the Society of Writers to His Majesty's Signet and Apprentices 1914-19:

Captain William Burns, 35 High Street, Hawick (Apprentice).

Mobilised in August 1914 as 2nd Lieutenant the Royal Scots. Adjutant August 1916 till August 1917. Served abroad from November 1917 till December 1917, and from September 1918 onwards. Promoted Captain.'
