The 1914-15 Star awarded to Gunner W. Watt, Calcutta Field Artillery, who was killed when the Mongolia hit a mine off the coast of Bombay; he had previously seen active service in East Africa

1914-15 Star (No. 30 Gnr. W. Watt, 8/Cal. Fd. Bty.), good very fine

William Watt was born on 20 May 1881 at Lochee, Forfarshire and went into the jute industry, initially in Dundee and latterly in India. Upon the outbreak of the Great War he joined the Calcutta Field Battery and served in East Africa from 3 October 1914-9 October 1916, latterly being discharged.

He was killed - one of 23 to lose their lives - when the Mongolia struck a double-mine several hours off Bombay on 24 June 1917, having returned to his civilian life. Some 11 boats were launched, although further boats failed due to the severe list of the ship, with Captain Llewellyn only leaving the post as the water rose past his knees on the sinking deck; sold together with copied research.
