Indian Mutiny 1857-59, 1 clasp, Central India (W. Silk. 14th Lgt. Drgns.), toned, extremely fine
William Silk, of Littlebourne in Canterbury, Kent, attested for the 14th Light Dragoons in January 1850 at the age of 22. His Discharge papers note 12 years 79 days service (just over nine of these being in 'The East Indies') with his conduct described as 'Very Good' and being in possession of two Good Conduct Badges. Pte. Silk served with his regiment in the Persian Expedition of 1857 before seeing service in Central India during the Mutiny; his papers note him being present at the Battle of Betwa (1 April 1858) and it was during this action that an officer of the regiment, Major James Leith, won a Victoria Cross for saving the life of a fellow officer.
Silk was discharged at Dublin in April 1862 as 'unfit for further service' due to 'disease of the bowel, the result of secondary syphilis and constitutional infirmity'.
