Crimea 1854-56, 2 clasps, Balaklava, Sebastopol (Pte. Jas. Mc. Donald. 93rd Ft.), contemporarily engraved in large upright capitals, highlights polished, several minor edge knocks, otherwise very fine
The 93rd (Sutherland Highlanders) Regiment of Foot made a name for themselves - earning the famous moniker "The Thin Red Line" - at the Battle of Balaklava on 25 October 1854 when, vastly outnumbered, they repulsed a Russian cavalry charge. Subsequently immortalised in oils by Robert Gibb and in prose by William H. Russell, correspondent for The Times, who later wrote of the 93rd that they were: "...a thin red streak tipped with a line of steel."
