John Johnson attested for the British Army as an Assistant Surgeon in 1854, at the age of 22, with a number of medical qualifications including a Diploma for Surgery from the College of Surgeons in Ireland. Johnson appears to have been variously posted to the Staff and the 44th Regiment of Foot, in addition to seeing service in the Crimea. However, whilst stationed at Fort St. George in 1858 his career came to an inglorious end on 10 June that year: Court-Martialled for being 'Drunk on Duty - Drunk Under Arrest', he was consequently dismissed from the service.
