Waterloo 1815 (James Howard, 1st Batt. 4th Reg. Foot.), suspension replaced with silver clip and large ring, worn, naming weak in places and perhaps re-defined with a little engraving, fine

James Howard was born in 1795, joined the 4th Regiment in July 1813 and would surely have seen service in North America at Bladensburg, Baltimore and New Orleans. He served at Waterloo in Captain Wilson's No. 8 Company and left the Regiment in September 1820. Re-joining in April 1821, he was finally discharged as an out-pensioner from Chelsea in August 1828 (WO97/263 refers). He was made a Sergeant, at which rank he served for 1 year 153 days. His discharge papers noted:

'Suffered much in the West Indies, sickly and unable to march.'
