Trials

A group of Post Office trials for the size F envelope using linen reinforcement (scrim); the first is a straight-cut plain envelope with the scrim folded to fit, including a portion for the flap; the second is also straight-cut, the scrim is glued to the envelope, the flap is left free and is gummed; two similar envelopes, zig-zag cut, the scrim is glued to the paper and and part of the flap, which is gummed; also a plain envelope (4¾ x 3 7/8 inch) sealed at sides with small, gummed flap, this envelope patented by Mr Norcombe but was unsatisfactory (his idea was to have all the sealing folds on one side of the envelope so any tampering could be easily spotted). There are a few tone spots and other age marks. An important group. (5 covers)

During the development of a suitable envelope for use with the new registration scheme, the Post Office conducted extensive trials to ensure that during handling, the envelopes would not burst open under the weight of coins, causing consequent loss to the Post Office. The envelopes eventually approved were manufactured from a strong, heavy duty paper, reinforced on the inside with a coarse open weave linen material known as scrim. These two layers were bonded together to form an extremely strong, yet light-weight envelope
