December 1840: Post Office Notice indicating that the System of Registration was to be adopted on 6th January 1841. The fee of 1/- to be paid in cash and on Foreign and Colonial or Ship Letters only valid to the Port of despatch. The exception was France and a detailed paragraph lists the restrictions, etc. The notice extols the benefits of Money Orders for small amounts of money and that bank notes should be cut in half, the second half not being despatched until confirmation of the first being received. Some soiling and faults at top and foot. A scarce document with regard to the registration of mail
