Knife Slits: 1840 (29 Dec.) "O.H.M.S." wrapper to the Procurator Fiscal, Paisley bearing 1840 Penny Black plate 4, OC-OD horizontal pair cancelled by red Maltese Cross; there is a large slit between the pair (affixed together at top and foot) with similar splits at each side, other margins good to large (close at top of OC), the reverse with Hamilton boxed despatch datestamp. There is a central vertical fold and the side flaps have been removed.

A fascinating early separation technique, the sheet would have been cut into strips of twelve and a roller cut applied between each stamp in the row. Photo
