Auction: 22028 - The Klempka Family Collection of Great Britain - Part II
Lot: 137

Great Britain
1840 One Penny Black
Plate 1a
KD in a light shade showing some plate wear, good margins (a sloping edge at top right corner just goes into the design) cancelled by a crisp strike of dark red Maltese Cross on 1840 (16 May) wrapper to London, the flap with the Andover despatch c.d.s. partly covered by London arrival (18,5); the stamp has been affixed to the cover by sealing wax; there is a light horizontal filing crease. An interesting cover showing one person's method of affixing the new stamps to the letter, perhaps not trusting the gum, and the cover was not otherwise sealed. An unusual May date cover. Brandon Certificate (1998). Photo
