There is a pencil note on the flap, "When the Mulready Envelope was first issued it occured to my grandfather Edward Newman that the inside might be used as a capital medium for advertisement, so he corresponded with the P. Office to ascertain if it would be allowed, and obtaining permission he made use of it as overleaf. Mulready taught his wife drawing and painted their son Bessington's portrait. Edward Newman Merril 1.6.81"
