Social History: 1846 (9 Sept.) printed broad sheet to Keithley headed "SHORT TIME"; bearing 1841 1d. tied by barred oval with Halifax and Bradford c.d.s. in blue. Folded for posting.
"It has been repeatedly stated ... that the hands employed in factories are desirous of running shorter time, though it should be accompanied by a proportionate reduction in wages: We have, in consequence ... to Reduce the Hours of Running ... from 12 hours per day, or 69 hours per week, to 11 hours per day, or 64 hours per week; paying all day wages after a proportionate reduction, and piece wages according to the reduction of work done. ... The parents of children between the ages of 13 and 15 to sign for them." There is some light ageing of the paper but generally in a fine state of preservation.
Also 1826 entire letter relating to the Luddite Riots. The writer is Capt. John Birtwhistle in Bradford with an interesting account including, "... the mob are easily dealt with & our people will find them much more easily repelled than their opponents were on the field of Waterloo; ...if it was not for the presence of the troops incalculable mischief from so many agitated & unemployed minds getting together brooding over their woes ...".
