Auction: 22027 - The "Ellerby Area" Hoard of English Gold Coins
Lot: 126
The Remarkable "Ellerby Area" Hoard of English Gold Coins (1610-1727) | James II (1685-1688), Guinea, 1686, 'No Stops', second laureate head left, rev. no stops in legend, crowned shields cruciform, emblem-adorned sceptres in angles, five strings to harp, edge obliquely milled, 8.19g [126.4grns], 5h (PAS: YORYM-18E848 = BM 2019 T668/108 this coin; MCE -; Farey - ; EGC -; Spink 3402), superficial friction to portrait, otherwise bright but with much residual lustre, almost very fine, an extremely rare variety not listed in any specialised reference work, with NGC 'Ellerby' Certification (#6380983-108)
Although the variety of the 1686 Guinea with no stops in the reverse legend has not been noted in even the most recent specialised reference, it is not unknown to collectors. A similar example, though from different dies, was sold at Heritage sale 3064, 20 April 2018, lot 30965, described as 'From the Collection of a Scottish Gentleman'. A second notable feature of this reverse is the lack of interiors to all the crowns.
