The Remarkable "Ellerby Area" Hoard of English Gold Coins (1610-1727) | James II (1685-1688), 'Royal African Company', Elephant & Castle, Guinea, 1685, first laureate head left, three protruding leaf tips, E&C below, rev. crowned shields cruciform, emblem-adorned sceptres in angles, five strings to harp, edge obliquely milled, 8.35g [128.9grns], 5h (PAS: YORYM-18E848 = BM 2019 T668/104 this coin; MCE 124; Farey 265; EGC - [cf. 322]; Spink 3401), lightly flecked with superficial friction in residually lustrous, striking softness to GRATIA and to corresponding area of reverse, otherwise a bolder fine, the reverse marginally better, the variety unknown to Bull, presumably rare thus, with NGC 'Ellerby' Certification (#6380983-104)
