Auction: 22027 - The "Ellerby Area" Hoard of English Gold Coins
Lot: 104

The Remarkable "Ellerby Area" Hoard of English Gold Coins (1610-1727) | NGC VG10 | Charles II (1660-1685), Guinea, 1677, fourth laureate head right, rev. no stop after HIB, crowned shields cruciform, emblem-adorned sceptres in angles, six strings to harp, edge obliquely milled, 8.14g [125.6grns], 6h (PAS: YORYM-18E848 = BM 2019 T668/87 this coin; MCE 76; Farey 180; EGC - [cf. 260 for reverse]; Spink 3344), partially toned and evenly circulated, strictly fair / fine, with NGC 'Ellerby' Certification, graded VG10 (#6380983-087)

For some reason Bull does not list a regular 1677 Guinea with no stop after HIB reverse. He does however list the Elephant and Castle bust (256 and 257) and also the inverted A for V in CAROLVS (260), all with this reverse. As the reverse clearly exists, and was used with both types of bust, it is therefore not unexpected that it should occur with a normal obverse. In fact a quick check on CoinArchives shows that of the thirteen offered at auction over the last twenty years, ten have the no stop reverse, with the number of harp strings ranging from four to six.
