Auction: 22027 - The "Ellerby Area" Hoard of English Gold Coins
Lot: 77
The Remarkable "Ellerby Area" Hoard of English Gold Coins (1610-1727) | NGC F12 | James II (1685-1688), Half-Guinea, 1686, OBV over BVS [?], first laureate head left, rev. crowned shields cruciform, four strings to harp, edge obliquely milled, 4.02g [62.0grns], 7h (PAS: YORYM-18E848 = BM 2019 T668/110 this coin; MCE 132; EGC 339 [R2]; Spink 3404), evenly circulated, bright but lustrous, good to fair / fine, scarce, with NGC 'Ellerby' Certification, graded F12 (#6380983-110)
Bull has noted the curious lettering on the obverse and considers the OBV to be over BVS. It not clear if this is the case here. The E of DEI is also curious and so by the same token could possibly be over another letter. On the other hand it may just a case of poorly made punches.
