Lot: 43
The Remarkable "Ellerby Area" Hoard of English Gold Coins (1610-1727) | NGC AU58 | Charles I (1625-1649), Group B, Class I, Unite, 29 June 1626 - 27 April 1627, Tower (under King), by Edward Greene after Abraham Vanderdoort, (m.m.) CAROLVS : D : G : MAG : BRI : FRA : ET : HI : REX, ascending colon stops, third-crowned bust 2 left, the so-called "sheep-faced" type, wearing ruff, XX behind, rev. (m.m. to right) FLORENT CONCORDIA REGNA • first-crowned square-topped shield 3 in light-garnished mantle, bird-headed harp A with six strings, 9.05g, 10h, m.m. cross calvary [10] (PAS: YORYM-18E848 = BM 2019 T668/42 this coin; Brooker - [cf. 30]; Schneider II, - [cf. 120] for bust variety; North 2148; Spink 2687), struck soft at quarters of periphery, otherwise on a full flan with preparatory die striations apparent on obverse, a bolder fine to almost very fine in parts, with NGC 'Ellerby' Certification, graded AU58 (#6380983-042)
"Although the bust is better designed and more pleasing than that of the Unites of Group A the portrait itself with its straight Greek profile and a badly drawn and rather small crown was not a great artistic achievement. The reverse design of the unites was also changed and the simplified shield garnishing (Pl. XVII , 27) is a definite improvement on the heavy and over-elaborate decorations of Group A."
