Auction: 22027 - The "Ellerby Area" Hoard of English Gold Coins
Lot: 8

The Remarkable "Ellerby Area" Hoard of English Gold Coins (1610-1727) | James I (1603-1625), Second Coinage, Crown Gold Issues [.917 Fine], Unite, 23 May 1612 - 28 April 1613, Tower, (m.m.) IACOBVS .' D .' G .' MAG .' BRI .' FRA .' ET HI .' REX fourth crowned bust right, wearing plain armour, holding orb and shouldering sceptre, rev. (m.m.)• FACIAM • EOS • IN • GENTEM • VNAM • crowned and garnished shield of arms, I-R at sides, 9.88g, 12h, m.m. tower [71] (PAS: YORYM-18E848 = BM 2019 T668/2 this coin; Lingford II, 937; Schneider I, 27; North 2084; Spink 2619), an unfortunate superficial scratch across bridge of nose and superficial hairlines across otherwise natural and residually lustrous fields, the peripheries accentuated by subtle orange tone, approaching very fine, with NGC 'Ellerby' Certification (#6380983-002)

In stark contrast to the previous coin, the Tower pyx mark presents the second largest output of James' second coinage with an enormous £299,151 pounds of Unites and fractions issued; only the trefoil issues of the following year dwarf it, especially when one includes the figures relating to its reuse for the final year of the third coinage.
