Covers and Cancellations
Straits Settlements 1868 CC 4c. rose (3, each slightly overlapping and stuck together) clearly cancelled by large "sarawak" h.s. in red, no other markings, fine. Very rare. Photo

Note: The function of this cancel is obscure. A small number of these, or the similar, small version were found in a pawnshop in Kuching by Captain Toppin, who soaked them of the covers before noticing the red "cancellations". Toppin showed the stamps to Bertrm Poole in 1906 and Poole published the details in the West End Philatelist in December of the same year.

Toppin only found about six examples, all are on the Straits Settlements 1868 issue.
