Postal History
1845 (June) ship letter from France to London endorsed "Consignee Letter", "Bill of Landing" and "Pr. Belfast", struck with boxed "m.b." overstruck with crowned "exempt.shiplr." S.2; 1846 (Aug.) from Singapore to London endorsed "Consignees", carried aboard the "William James", originally charged "8", deleted once the consignee's cargo appeared on the ship's manifest and subsequently charged "3" comprising the Captain's gratuity of 2d. plus 1d. inland postage, struck on face with crowned "exempt.shiplr" (S.2), reverse step "ship letter/gravesend" and crown circle "ship letter/london" on reverse. The latter with minor soiling and faults though a wonderful and scarce pair.
