Uniform Penny Post First Day Cover
1840 (10 Jan.) entire letter from London to Kirkwall, Orkney with clear London "a/paid/10jan10/1840" d.s. in red and "St. James's St/1pyP.Paid" h.s. in blue, the letter begins "I take advantage of the commencement of the Penny Postage to write to you a few lines, and considering the distance this letter will have to travel, I think it will be one of the worst bargains of the day!", the letter travelling some 810 miles and would have cost the sender 1/4½d. just a few weeks before. A fascinating and most important item of postal history.
