1684 (5 April) entire letter, endorsed within "Saturday 5 Ap 84", also endorsed "5/4: 3..3¼" (5 April, 3pm..3.15pm.), "ffor mr Carpainter att ye Earle of Notinghames neare ye Square in SoHooe Sohoe", on reverse and opening well for display, very fine "peny/post/payd/p" and "W/Mor/8" in circle (Westminster/Morning/8) time stamp. An exceptional strike of this Government Penny Post handstamp.

A new discovery of the Type I Dockwra, and a major British Postal History rarity of the greatest importance .


Note: Daniel Finch, second Earl of Nottingham and sixth Earl of Winchelsea (1647-1730) was First Lord of the Admiralty, 1680-1684, and elected M.P. for both Lichfield and Newtown (1681). His private character is universally represented as stainless and, owing to his dark complexion and lugubrious countenance, he acquired the nickname Don Dismal.
