Postal History
1648-49, three entire letters: 1648 (5 Jan.) from Roger Hill (M.P. for Bridport) in Chelmsford to his wife with integral address panel reading "For my very best friend Mrs Abigal Hill these, Assington"; 1648 (16 April) from Carlisle, address panel reading "For the Rt. Honoble, Sir Philip Musgrave, Lieutenant General. to General Sir, Mamaduke Langdale" (in this month Musgrave secured Carlisle for the King); 1649 (15 Jan.) from Col. Thomas Crompton in Stafford, the address panel reading "For his most honored friend Sr Pete Wentworth Kt and Bartt, there withn my humble servise, Westminster" with contents concerning the farming of Royalist estates (Peter Wentworth served in the Commonwealth councils of state but refused to act as judge of Charles I in 1649). A fine and rare trio with wonderful insight into this late stage of the Civil War, two being from the final year of the second war and one from the shorted third war.

Note: Charles I went on trial during the third Civil War period though Cromwell found difficulty in passing judgement as the King still held ultimate authority. Cromwell exerted great pressure on Council members to sign Charles' death warrant and letters from those who refused to sign are particularly rare.
