G.P.O./Admiralty Period, 1806-40
1825 (Jan.) and 1826 (May) entire letters ex the Astwood correspondence from London to Bermuda with despatch datestamps on reverse, both marked "Per Packet" and both initially rated "2/2", the first per Marchioness of Salisbury to Halifax and thence to Bermuda by H.M. Brig Sappho with rating on arrival of "3/8" (2/2d. plus 5d. internal postage), the second per Sphynx to Halifax and thence by H.M.S. Grasshopper with a rating of "3/9½", the additional 1½d. due to inflation
Note: The Admiralty took over the North Atlantic route from April 1823. The Bermuda Post Office was closed from November 1821 until May 1830 due to the Act of 1820, No. 5, expiring and not being renewed.
