Lot: 223

Cyprus
1928 (1 Feb.) 50th Anniversary of British Rule
Covers
1929 (5 June) envelope registered from Limassol to Bombay and re-addressed to Liverpool, bearing 1pi., 1½pi., 4pi. and keyplate ½pi., all tied by oval Registered Limassol d.s. and showing "Service Transdesertique/Syro-Iraquien Damas-Baghdad." label at left, the 7pi. postage including the 3pi. fee for this overland desert motor service, with a myriad of transit and arrival datestamps on reverse. A scarce cover. Photo

Note: Mail for this route had to bear this label, and included this extra 3pi. fee from June 1929 when the service was started by the Nairn Eastern Transport Co., until the extra fee was abolished in 1930. Little mail was sent due to this high fee, despite reducing transit time for letters by ten days.
