1d. envelope printed in dull vermilion on greyish laid paper, watermarked Britannia, setting 3B, fine strike of the crowned 1840 (3 Mar.) c.d.s., addressed to Durham. The contents were overweight and with manuscript "More to pay", manuscript "1" and "more/to/pay" in double circle in red; manuscript notation at right of the sender, the Lord of Chester. Slightly soiling and creasing nevertheless very desirable being the only recorded example of an underpaid Parliamentary envelope. R.P.S. Certificate (2022). S.G. PE5, £12,000++. Photo
