First Type: 1840 (28 Jan.) entire wrapper with "PRE" and "PAID" in blue around fancy scroll, addressed to solicitors in Southampton showing manuscript "Pd 1" in large characters, a faint strike of Coventry (21.1) c.d.s. and London Paid tombstone (29.1) in red. The letter was written for J.W. Buchanan (solicitor) in Nuneaton. The letter was then turned and resent locally in Southampton (2.2) with manuscript "2" in black for unpaid. There is a light horizontal filing fold at foot. A rare and important cover. R.P.S. Certificate (2008) which notes "partial splitting down fold". Ex. the Royal Collection. Cat. £15,000. Photo
