Postal History
"A plan for obtaining a more speedy Postage Communication between London and the distant parts of the Kingdom", privately printed for the author, Henry Burgess, in 1815. The volume includes a coloured "Map of England with the routes of the extra posts & the principal circles of commercial interest". Burgess suggests "an extra post" with "an augmentation on the prices of postage". A stark contrast to Rowland Hill's later plan. Good condition. Very rare and a highly important volume.
Note: Henry Burgess (1871-1863), born into a Quaker family, was an inventor, economist, commercial inverstor and, from 1827-1850, the owner-editor of the "Bankers Circular", as an economist he devoted much energy to his Postage plan, as well as a petition because Parliament in the matter of English currency (c. 1830); and a study of the tariffs imposed upon imports such as tea, sugar, malt and hops during the 1840s
