Second Treaty of Vienna, AR Medal, 1731, by J. Croker, GEORGIVS • II • D : G : MAG : BRI : FRA : ET • H : REX • F • D •, laureate bust left, rev. PRAESTAT • COMPONERE, Neptune in his Marine car driven by four hippocamps commands tranquillity from the winds, FOEDVS • VIENNENSE M•DCC•XXXI in exergue in two lines, plain edge, 47mm, 45.01g (Eimer 523; MI ii 496/39; Harding 61 this medal), some nailmarks to the obverse, nevertheless with an underlying brilliance to toned surfaces, extremely fine and scarcely offered in silver

A number of disagreements had arisen since the Treaty of Utrecht ended the war of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714). A treaty signed at Vienna, and mediated by George II, terminated these disputes and, in particular, restored a monopoly over trade with India to the English East India Company.

This medal is interesting principally because of a late but fundamental change in the nature of Croker's work. The obverse has a standard portrait of George II, but the reverse was engraved in a fine baroque style, very different from Croker's earlier work which was based on a more restrained version of French classicism.
