George I, Entry into London, AR Medal, 1714, by J. Croker, GEORGIVS • D • G • MAG • BRI • FRA • ET • HIB • REX • F • D •, laureate, armoured and draped bust right, rev. LAETITIA PVBLICA, The King, in a carriage before the Royal Exchange, is presented with the City Keys by Londinia, ADVENTVS • REGIS • IN • VRBEM • 20 • SEPT: 1714 • in exergue in four lines, plain edge, 47mm, 45.68g (Eimer 467; MI ii 423/7; van Loon 253; Harding 51 this medal), a couple of faint hairlines to fields, otherwise with brilliant surfaces beneath rich cabinet toning, practically as struck

George proceeded from Greenwich to London in a state coach drawn by eight horses, accompanied by at least 250 other coaches each drawn by six horses. The procession was headed by the Lord Major and all the City Magistrates on horseback.



The reverse shows George in a Roman quadriga, passing the Royal Exchange. A female figure representing London presents George with an enormous key symbolising his acceptance by the city.
