Drappentier, Peace, crowned, holds an olive branch and locks the door of the Temple of Janus, inscribed ANNO MDCCXIII, War and Discord chained on the steps, Mercury holding a scroll inscribed EUROPAE PAX REDDITA •, TRAIECTUM in exergue, rev. Europe, laureate and seated left, seated on the sea-shore holding an olive branch and cornucopia, ships beyond, EUROPA in exergue, plain edge, 48mm, 51.39g (Eimer 459; MI ii 402/262; van Loon 227; Harding 46 this medal), a few very small hairlines to the reverse field, otherwise with a highly attractive flashy brilliance and cabinet toning, most handsomely and intricately engraved, practically as struck, very rare

In an effort to find peace, the Congress of Utrecht opened in January 1712, and while it was still in session, French forces retook Bouchain, Quesnoy and Douai. This forced most of the remaining members of the Alliance to agree what terms they could with the French. Alone among the Allies, the German States fought on, but were forced to agree peace terms one year later.
