Battle of Saragossa, AR Medal, 1710, by J. Croker, ANNA • AVGVSTA •, laureate and draped bust left, rev. HISPANIS • PROFLIGATIS •, Victory presents captured Spanish standards to Anne, enthroned, AD • CAESARIAM • AVGVSTAM • AVG • IX • MDCCX • in exergue in three lines, plain edge, 48mm, 45.78g (Eimer 446; MI ii 373/219; van Loon V 159; Harding 43 this medal), the obverse with some hairlines, yet with brilliant proof-like and toned surfaces, the high relief and more delicately engraved areas pleasingly intact, most attractive, extremely fine

The battle of Saragossa took place in august 1710 during the War of Spanish Succession. General Stanhope emerged victorious, the defeated Spanish army losing 5,000, all their artillery and many standards and colours. In an interesting sidelight on the importance of captured standards at that time, Colonel Harrison was despatched to London at 11pm on the night of the battle carrying not only the news of the victory but also the standards.
