Peace of Ryswick, AR Medal, 1697, by R. Arondeaux, CAESA FIRMABANT FOEDERA PORCA •, European Rulers [Leopold I, Louis XIV, William III and Carl XII] closing the doors of the Temple of Janus, rev. Coats-of-Arms around, RYSWYK GUILELMI III D • G • M • BRITAN • ETC • R • PALAT •, view of Ryswick Palace within border, MDCXCVII in exergue, plain edge, 49mm, 46.86g (Eimer -; MI ii, 169/453; van Loon IV, 273; Harding 32), with attractive proof-like surfaces, with rich cabinet toning, more so to the obverse, a most handsome as struck example and rare

In Roman mythology the doors of the temple could only be closed on the conclusion of a peace treaty and had to be accompanied by the sacrifice of a sow. The design of this medal is thus an incongruous mixture of high fashion and ancient mythology.
