Shortly after the Coronation of William and Mary, an Act of Toleration was passed through parliament which guaranteed dissenters the free exercise of their opinions. The reverse shows William greeting Britannia who tramples on the chains of superstition - another anti-Catholic reference. She is accompanied by figures emblematic of Religion and Liberty. Religion carries a cross and an open bible inscribed 'the word of the Lord stands for ever'. Liberty carries the cornucopia of plenty and a scroll inscribed 'Test' - a reference to an earlier Act which effectively disbarred Catholics from high office.
