NGC MS63 | George III (1760-1820), Third-Guinea, 1799, Type 1, first laureate head right, rev. crown, date in legend, edge obliquely milled, 2.78g, 12h (Murdoch III, 109[b]; Selig 1069; MCE 451; EGC 869 [R3]; Spink 3738), the odd faint contact mark, otherwise bright and lustrous, a pleasingly good extremely fine, the key date, very rare, especially in this exemplary condition, in NGC holder, graded MS63 (Cert. #4885286-004)

Only the Hayleigh specimen [NGC MS63+], sold through these rooms as part of the memorable Stratos Sale of Spectacular English Gold Coins ranks a solitary plus grade finer. The 1799 issue gets an alarming lack of attention from English gold coin specialists despite its absence from many auctions and even the finest of 18th and 19th Century cabinets. Perhaps two dozen examples have appeared at global public auction over the past two decades and yet its market price in the finest grades languishes eons behinds a comparable Gothic Crown, and we can all see how frequently they appear on the market thanks to a 'Magnificent Seven' being offered in this Auction alone today - one for each decade of Her Present Majesty's Reign!
