Kevin Clancy, Director of the Royal Mint Museum, has previously examined this variety and in a communication of 1 November 2012 with Spink, stated: 'Close examination of the date and comparison with similar coins in the Royal Mint Museum have led to the conclusion that a 9 has been entered over a 3.'
