Aethelred II (978-1016), 'Second Hand' Type, Penny, 985-991, Wareham, Beorhtric, diademed and draped bust right, trefoil-tipped sceptre before, rev. + BYRHTRIC M-O PER, descending hand, dividing Alpha and Omega, 1.36g, 3h (SCBI 7, 1696 same dies; North 768; BMC IId; Spink 1146), some daylight spots resulting from crack through portrait, the surfaces crinkled and double-struck to reverse, otherwise toned, struck details approaching very fine, extremely rare
